Göbekli Tepe Temple

The oldest temple ever discovered.

In 1994, a farmer in Turkey noticed a massive rectangular limestone block emerging from the ground.

The oldest sections date back to the mid-10th millennium BCE, making it the oldest known temple of monumental stone architecture ever discovered.

For more than 20 years now, archaeologists have been excavating the site in an effort to reconstruct and understand this fragment of human history.

The excavations have revealed complex arrangements of dozens of T-shaped pillars forming circles, featuring many carvings and sculptures of symbols and animals.
